This is why it must be carefully analyzed before using it for research or assessment purposes.

Despite its limitations, the DCT is a useful tool for investigating the relationship between prosody and information structure in non-native speakers. The ability to alter the social variables that are relevant to politeness in two or more steps can be a benefit. This ability can be used to study the effect of prosody in various cultural contexts.

In the field of linguistics the DCT is now one of the most important instruments for analyzing learners’ behaviors in communication. It can be used to investigate many issues, such as manner of speaking, turn-taking, and lexical choices. It can be used to evaluate phonological complexity in learners speaking.

Recent research used the DCT as an instrument to test the refusal skills of EFL students. Participants were presented with various scenarios and were required to choose a suitable response from the options offered. Metapragmatic Questionnaires (MQs)

This study examined Chinese learners’ pragmatic choices in their use of Korean using a variety of experimental tools, such as Discourse Completion Tasks (DCTs) as well as metapragmatic questionnaires and Refusal Interviews (RIs). The participants were 46 CLKs of upper-intermediate who participated in MQs, DCTs, and RIs. They were also asked to provide reflections on their assessments and their refusals to participate in RIs. The results revealed that CLKs were more likely to reject native Korean pragmatic norms, and their decisions were influenced by four primary factors: their personalities, their multilingual identities, ongoing lives, and their relational benefits. These findings have pedagogical implications for L2 Korean assessment.

First, the MQ data were analysed to identify the participants’ pragmatic choices. The data was categorized according Ishihara (2010)’s definition of pragmatic resistance. Then, we compared their choices made by the participants with their linguistic performance on DCTs in order to determine if they were a sign of pragmatic resistance. The RIs further revealed that CLKs were aware of their own pragmatism in each DCT situation. RIs were conducted on a one-to-one basis in the space of two days of participants having completed the MQs. The RIs were recorded and transcribed by two coders independent of each other and then coded. The coding was an iterative process, where the coders listened and discussed each transcript. The results of coding were compared to the original RI transcripts, which gave an indication of how the RIs were able to capture the fundamental behaviors.

Interviews with Refusal

One of the most important questions in pragmatic research is why learners choose to resist the pragmatic norms of native speakers. Recent research sought to answer this question using various experiments, including DCTs MQs and RIs. Participants comprised 46 CLKs and 44 CNSs from five Korean Universities. They were asked to perform the DCTs in their first language and complete the MQs in either their L1 or their L2. They were then invited to an RI, where they were asked to reflect on and discuss their responses to each DCT situation.

The results showed that on average, the CLKs resisted the pragmatic norms of native speakers in more than 40% of their responses. They did so even though they could create patterns that resembled native ones. They were also aware of their pragmatic resistance. They attributed their choice to learner-internal factors such as their personalities and multilingual identities. They also referred to external factors like relational affordances. For example, they described how their relationships with professors facilitated a more relaxed performance in regards to the linguistic and intercultural standards of their university.

However, the interviewees also expressed concern about the social pressures and punishments they could be subjected to if they strayed from their social norms. They were concerned that their native interlocutors may view them as "foreignersand consider them unintelligent. This was a concern similar to those voiced by Brown (2013) and Ishihara (2009).

These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are not the norm for Korean learners. They could still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. Future researchers should reassess the applicability of these tests in various contexts and in particular situations. This will enable them to better know how different cultures may impact the pragmatic behavior of L2 students in the classroom and beyond. Interviewees were presented with two scenarios which involved interactions with their co-workers and were asked to choose one of the strategies below to use when making demands. The interviewees were then asked to justify their choice. Most of the participants attributed their rational opposition to their personality.
